American Apparel Party
Friday, May 9 at Sonotheque, 9 p.m.; free with RSVP to rsvp@emptybottle.com, $10 otherwise
What's not to love about corporations and companies providing free stuff to faithful consumers? American Apparel says thank you to its oversaturated Chicago market with the promise of good music provided by DJ Major Taylor and Erica from the band Office and free goodies like their comfy tees. Hopefully, the party will get as crazy as some of the AA photo shoots are rumored to be.
Rock the Rabbit
Friday, May 9 at darkroom
Tonight, Playboy's Rock the Rabbit, an annual music tour that highlights up-and-coming acts, presents '70s rock and funk throwback band The Heavy alongside Chicago's Life During Wartime DJs and Rocktapussy, the new duo of LDW's Mother Hubbard and Jessica from Office. There's no guarantee, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some kind of free booze to go along with this show.
DJ MTM
Saturday, May 10 at Rodan, 9 p.m; free
If you couldn't make it out to all the freebie events earlier this week, remember there's always Rodan; the perfect place to head when you just want to kick back, peep eye candy and drink for cheap but don't want to settle for a dirty dive bar. The second Saturday of the month welcomes resident DJ Murry the Magnificent. MTM has held down this residency for a few years now, yet always manages to keep the sounds fresh by playing soul and disco one month to dance and hip-hop the next.
Get Physical tour with M.A.N.D.Y.
Saturday, May 10 at Vision Nightclub, 10 p.m.; $15-$20 Vision continues to wean itself off of the cheesy trance scenes that helped shoot it to super-club status by bringing in large electronic acts from varying genres. Tonight, the Get Physical Records tour lands in Chicago, with Patrick Baudmer and Phillip Jung (the co-founders of Get Physical Records), better known as M.A.N.D.Y., headlining along with Chicago-house influenced European DJs Heidi and techno duo Audiofly.
