Editorial Review of Cans Bar & Canteen

Cans Bar & CanteenOffering the best in "old school fun," the nondescript, tavern-esque space boasts classic video games like Tetris and Ms. Pac Man, a jukebox blaring eighties favorites and—you guessed it—more than 34 varieties of good, old-fashioned canned beer. Grab a traditional Pabst Blue Ribbon and head to the pool table, or sip on more exotic brews like Japanese Sapporo (no, it doesn’t only come in a big glass bottle) and Belgium’s Wittekerke (the bartender insisted it’s better than a Blue Moon).

If canned beer only evokes painful memories of fraternity parties past, check out the bottled list, which includes the juicy Lindenman’s Framboise, or opt for one of the ten on draft. Sunday brunchers eagerly partake in the weekend’s build-your-own Bloody Mary bar, and swanky drinkers short on cash will love Thursday’s $6 martini special.

Accompanying food remains true to Cans' "old-school" roots and includes bar staples like spinach and artichoke dip, quesadillas and eight different kinds of burgers (try the Cajun, with jalapeno relish and chipotle mayo). Drop by on Mondays for 35-cent wings but not before digging into a pile of surprisingly delicious fried pickles (perfectly dippable in ranch dressing).

During weekends, the bar hosts cross-town tourists while locals pack the place during the week. Either way, your party might have to spill onto the upstairs deck—you surely won’t be the only old-schooler in town.

Average cost: <$10
