While Hackney's family-owned restaurants have five different locations, the best one to go to is Hackney's on Harms and Lake in West Glenview. Not only is this the original location, but they also have one of the best outdoor patios in the northern suburbs. It's located just across the street from the Cook County Forest Preserve Harms Woods, and eating there is just like a picnic in the woods. Lines during the summer can be long, but they are worth the wait.
Hackney's is best known for two dishes: the brick of fried onions and the half-pound grilled hamburgers. The onions are incredibly greasy and very good. One brick-shaped onion block can feed a family of four. A brick of onions is also available for couples (just don't plan on kissing afterwards). The burgers are best ordered on the dark rye bread with swiss cheese, but normal buns are also available. More adventurous eaters should try the buffalo burgers. Buffalo is a little tougher than beef, but it's still tasty. A full menu with dishes besides burgers and onions is also served, but those two dishes are hard to beat.
Prices are usually under $10 and the service is friendly, although watching the help run around trying to serve too many people gets old. This is the perfect restaurant for those lazy summer days.
