The former Gentry space on Halsted Street has been revamped with red hues, swanky drinks and vintage decor. Poppy music videos stream through two framed flat screens that turn to mirrors when the sun goes down. A stained-glass window positioned behind the bar illuminates the drink selection, where you won't find a single beer on tap. Scarlet offers a few brews by the bottle, but if you're going to spend the evening at a place to be seen, wouldn't you rather do it sipping martinis? Try the signature Scarlet cocktail with three different flavored vodkas (raspberry, orange and vanilla) or the fruity Blue Balls martini. A smaller bar in the back can be reserved for private parties and a back patio is prime seating on a sunny day.
One regular, who commutes from Naperville just to hang out at this posh spot, said the music alone is worth the trip. He's talking about house DJ Carla Starla, who spins (and occasionally sings) every Friday night. There's no designated dance floor here, but that doesn't stop the Scarlet crowd from breakin' it down. Manager Geoff Carlson recommends stopping by on Mondays, when the bar shows feature films beginning at 8 p.m.; not only will you avoid cinematic annoyances such as seat kicking and popcorn throwing, but your bartender will serve you as many martinis as you like at theater concession prices.
