Ten years from now, will it be possible to pinpoint an exact time when Division Street moved from being hip to just being cool? Probably not, though those with a sharp memory may point to the opening of
The Boundary, and then months later, to that of The Fifty/50 as evidence.
This new sports bar, run by restaurant veterans Greg Mohr and Scott Weiner, is housed in the former Bravo Tapas space. It sports three levels of seating, with the basement offering a cocktail-friendly vibe, the main floor acting as the more casual bar area and the second floor filling the role of sit-down restaurant. Regardless of where you sit, you won't be far from a mounted flat-screen TV, which will surely be set to broadcast the current Cubs/White Sox/Bears/Bulls game. On game nights, proceed with caution, as the noise coming from the multiple televisions can be deafening.
Menu-wise, proceed with abandon. Between the burgers, ribs and adorable ramekins of mac 'n' cheese ($8 and you can pick your toppings, which include smoked chicken, bacon and jalapenos), we didn't know where to look first, but it seemed the rest of the bar did; at the sliders, which were being ordered by almost every table in the place. At $3 a pop, you can afford to try everything from the grilled cheese to the juicy "triple-secret" burger. Skip the fish and chips, which were salty and came with flimsier fries than we would have liked.
No sports bar would be complete without ample boozing options, and The Fifty/50 doesn't disappoint. A special mixed-drink menu features beer cocktails (like Hoegaarden and OJ, or a lagerita with, you guessed it, beer and tequila), and each week, a different 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor is available--in a paper bag, of course. Bigger spenders will be happy to order bottle service.
