| A true renaissance figure in today's Chicago music scene, Sparrow is a pianist, composer, recording engineer/producer, author, and much more. Born in Chicago in 1954, Sparrow was the city of Chicago's composer-in-residence in 1979-80. As an engineer or producer, he has recorded over 200 albums, including Tatsu Aoki, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Richie Cole, Bob Dorough, Malachi Favors, George Flynn, George Freeman, Von Freeman, Johnny Frigo, Fareed Haque, Erwin Helfer, Yusef Lateef, The Leaders, Howard Levy, Bobby Lewis, Mighty Blue Kings, Little Milton, Don Moye, Willie Pickens, and Big Moose Walker. He founded Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio and Production Facility in 1977, and he is a partner of important local jazz label Southport Records (with his wife, Joanie Pallato), which has produced nearly 100 albums since 1979. In addition to his own recordings, Sparrow's compositions have appeared on recordings of over 20 other artists. He has scored 4 feature-length films, composed ballets, and performed at nearly all of Chicago's jazz venues. He's even written articles and reviews in music publications Down Beat, CD Review, and Film Score Monthly, and several full-length plays and screenplays.
