| The Chicago Reader calls Erwin Helfer "an unsung hero of Chicago blues, a pianist who can pound out anything from boogie to Bach, and a teacher who's inspired almost everyone in these parts who's serious about playing blues keyboards (Myra Melford, Yoko Noge, etc.)" The elegant local boogie-woogie/ trad barrelhouse blues pianist is part of Chicago's Blues in the Schools program, teaching local elementary students. He and a fellow Blues in the Schooler, Katherine Davis, are scheduled to perform on the Front Porch Stage at the 1999 Chicago Bluesfest. This titan was often backed by veteran S.P. Leary before that drummer's death. His current band is called the Chicago Boogie Ensemble.
