Six Northwestern students began Rebecca's Statue in 1996 and have now cut down to a five-piece band. Original members Marshall Greenhouse (drums), Michael Grill (vocals/ guitar/harmonica) and Dave Glines (guitar/vocals) have been joined by bassist Chris Gangi and keyboardist Ben Nusbaum to complete the current group of players. With a selection of originals and covers, the group offers a neo-hippie groove at the Cubby Bear, Hog Head McDunna's, Sidelines and other Chicago clubs. Their eclectic style ranges from free improv to blues to funk to rock to folk. They have had guests such as Shirley King (B.B.'s daughter) Quintus McCormick and Zachery Brock sit in with them for live shows.
More recently, Rebecca's Statue has released its first album, "Drinking From the Water Clock," which members produced themselves. Tracks run the gamut from playfully energetic to mellow and introspective. Also featured on this 12-track CD are jazz guitarist Fareed Haque and blues musician Son Seals. The band also is working with Seals on The Mockingbird Foundation's Phish tribute album, "Sharin' in the Groove: Celebrating the Music of Phish." (Alissa LaSovage)
