| Probably the most influential quartet ever to come from African-American gospel, this group was formed in Trinity, Texas, in 1926, and moved to Chicago in 1938. One of the pioneers of the modern gospel style, The Soul Stirrers started the careers of singers ranging from Sam Cooke, Paul Foster, R.H. Harris and Jonnie Taylor. Several groups carry on their legacy. One, called the Original Soul Stirrers, performed at the 1998 Chicago Gospel Festival.
