Steve Million

Talented, but restrained jazz pianist. Often plays in unusual settings: Monk's Dream, is his organ/piano/drums trio and he's a member of Jeff Newell's crescent city faux-marching band New Trad Octet. He's also part of the latin jazz sextet Fe with Steve Eisen.

But his recent disc called Million to One released on Palmetto Jazz, as well as his live work with his Quintet (which includes bassist Larry Kohut and trumpeter Randy Brecker), shows that he can, indeed, play straight-forward jazz. And indeed, as the Chicago Reader's Neil Tesser says, Million "shapes both his improvisations and his compositions like a careful sculptor."

Of Million, Down Beat Magazine says "... the Chicagoan brings discipline, personality, imagination, talent and quiet passion to his playing and songwriting."

The Chicago Tribune's Howard Reich adds, "To Million, the object is not to create great gales of sound or dazzling fingerwork but to transform musical themes in clever and often idiosyncratic ways."
