It's almost impossible to miss this massive Chicago Avenue restaurant with a giant neon sign and its own parking lot (one of the few in the area). The interior feels slightly swankier than one may expect with a large waiting area, a long bar and a two-room dining area. But the wood paneling and giant banner advertising margarita specials let first-time visitors know they can leave their suit jackets at home.
The menu offers standard taqueria fare—tacos, tortas, burritos, tostadas—made with chicken, beef, avocado or veggie, or filled with more adventurous picks like egg or, ahem, cow foot. For entrees, you'll find combinations of tacos, burritos and the like served with rice and beans and usually priced under $10. Diners rave about the mole sauces, and the affordable tacos deliver on value and taste. For $1.75, you get a corn tortilla overflowing with toppings; all sit-down guests are treated to never-ending chips and salsa.
Thirsty and thrifty visitors will enjoy the $2.75 margarita special on Mondays and Thursdays. It applies to regular and flavored margaritas, frozen or on the rocks. During the same days, you can also score pitchers at a discount. Other alcoholic options include Mexican beers such as Pacifico and Tecate, and people who'd rather stay sober should check out the excellent Horchata.
Tecalitlan also offers speedy takeout service for the hungry local on the go. Margaritas, of course, are not included.
