He may be known worldwide for his work with Sun Ra, but Kelan Phil Cohran has done more than enough to carve out his own distinguishable legacy. His work as a bandleader spans across four decades, and is a rich mixture of funk, soul and jazz—all of which is rooted heavily in his studies as an astronomer and cosmologist. At 85, Phil still hasn’t lost a step both as a musician and as an intellectual. He very much fits the mold as a bad ass old man. His stage performances are a lesson in art, music, and philosophy, and looks to educate just as much as it looks to entertain. Last time he got on stage he worked a number of instruments including a harp, frankiphone and kalimba, which, let’s be honest here, is an arsenal of instruments that rarely finds a master. Cover is set between $12-$15 and it is highly recommended you get there early. (J. Min)
