At first glance, Provenance seems an exciting competitor to Logan Square's bevy of supermercados. In reality, it's apples and oranges. This upscale grocery is a place for, well, upscale and delicious things. Fresh Red Hen loaves take the place of Wonder Bread, processed cheese is traded for artisanal options, and Dannon makes way for Fage. If you're throwing an impromptu dinner party, or attending one, a stop here will have you covered.

But Provenance offers more than fancy mustards and pates. Owner Tracy Kellner has done an impressive job of stocking a restrained number of wines and Belgian-style beers that impress, from the flying-off-the-shelves Quinta de Cabriz (less than $7) to Tempranillos, Zinfandels and sake, all priced at less than $25. Saturday wine tastings, held from 3-5 p.m., generously let you sample the goods before buying. (You'll also get a taste of Provenance's beyond-friendly, neighborhood-centric vibe).

The everyday shopper will find a small selection of produce (purple potatoes, heirloom tomatoes) and those in need of something sweet will surely be tempted by fine boutique chocolates.

There's also a Provenance location in Lincoln Square.
