Providing pampering for penny pinchers, the New School offers full-body relaxation massages for a slim $33, a price guaranteed to make you blush at the memory of the $95 sessions you've forked over the credit card for. The 55-minute massages are given by New School students; while it's a bit of a crapshoot in terms of how talented your masseuse is, know that each one has undergone 250-300 hours of study before going to town on your back.
You'll forgo some of the comforts of a true spa in exchange for the savings: The third-floor reception area is pretty basic, and massages go down in a sparse, cubicle-type space sectioned off with an earthy curtain. You're not able to request a male or female therapist or a specific therapist by name; while you can indicate the fact that your lower back is your nemesis, there's no telling how thoroughly your request will be carried out; and you'll have to fill out a quick evaluation form before leaving.
There are some unusual perks, though: A real-time online calendar lets you see what appointments are available in the next 14 days (you'll have to call to book though). Return for another massage—or massages—within the month and pay just $28 each. If this sounds good but just a little too green for you, consider booking an appointment with an instructor or graduate of the school; in this case, you can cherry-pick your masseuse and type of massage. A 60-minute deep tissue runs $55, as do the pregnancy and sports massages; return in a month and get the same $5-off deal.
