Just going by the name, I thought this was one of those illegal, child work-centers for making soccer balls on the cheap. How wrong I was. Instead, the name refers to the fact that this gym (who knew!) is dedicated to making you sweat. Profusely. By the gallon. EVERYWHERE. Basically, if you're looking for a no-frills spot to shed a few pounds or tone your muscles, this is the place for you. Like your typical gym, Sweat Shop is packed with equipment and classes. The main floor overflows with treadmills, elliptical machines and Stairmasters in the front, and weight machines in the back. A large free weight section allows you pick your poison, with weights ranging from 2-130 pounds. During peak hours (roughly 5 to 7 p.m. on weekdays), it does tend to get crowded, making it likely you'll have to wait to use one of the machines.
The Classes: Though it's a small gym, Sweat Shop offers a number of classes. In addition to the spinning room, there's a room for toning and zoning (out) via pilates and yoga classes, which include Power/Vinyassa/Flow Yoga and Bikram yoga. The main studio room on the first floor also features kickboxing, cardio and strength-training classes for those craving a weekly "Gutbusters" session. One of the more popular classes for those serious about getting in shape is the boot camp. Held two days a week for six weeks, the class features an intensive training mix of cardio, flexibility and strength training exercises. Early birds should catch this worm: The class is held from 6-7 a.m. from May to September outdoors near the Belmont/Sheridan area.
The Extras: Located in the center of Boystown, the gym definitely features a predominantly male-heavy demographic, but if you are a girl looking to work out without getting hit on, this is a good spot for you. Like most gyms, members have access to free towels and there is a shower and locker area as well. New gym members can get a fitness assessment with a personal trainer when they join.
