People don't come to Chicago Comics to flip through some worn-out Superman titles. A community staple since 1986, this Lakeview shop prides itself on finding any comic that customers seek, as long as it's in print.

Like the Lady Liberty of the comic world, a mannequin covered in a decoupage of comics stands atop a table near the shop's entrance, gazing down upon curious customers. A display of shirts hangs on the wall behind her, paying tribute to a bevy of beloved cartoon characters. Shelves upon shelves stand cluttered with comics and magazines of every genre—from independent, mainstream and underground publications to zines. In addition to comics, awestruck fans will find a variety of action figures, manga, mini-comics and collectors' items. Every column, nook and cranny in Chicago Comics hides beneath a clutter of posters or photographs, but the most exceptional collection rests behind the register—an amalgam of rare and expensive comic books that wait patiently for the buyer willing to fork over the hefty adoption fee.

Despites the clutter and constant flow of customers, the store's wide selection will wow neophytes and aficionados alike. Though helpful to those with questions, the staff leaves customers alone to browse to their hearts' content and graciously greets regulars who return for more.
