| Author of more than 80 books, Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) is best-known for his scathing fictional expose of conditions at the Union Stock Yards (The Jungle). The material, which came from a brief stint reporting for a Chicago Socialist newspaper, led to the creation of the federal Food and Drug Administration.
