Like its neighbors on nearby Rush Street, Coq d'Or is a classy establishment, not intended to serve rambunctious partiers looking for a wild night on the town. Instead, it caters to a more low-key and mature crowd with its simple fare and intimate atmosphere.

Coq d'Or offers a basic menu of soups and sandwiches, pastas and steaks. Its location just north of the Watertower mall makes it a great place to warm up after a day of shopping on the Magnificent Mile. Plus, Coq d'Or's reasonable prices won't worry your already-weary wallet. Open for lunch and dinner, the lounge gets fairly busy around major meal hours, and it does not take reservations.

At night, perhaps the biggest draw to Coq d'Or is the live piano music from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The former home of Chicago's legendary piano man Buddy Charles, Coq d'Or is well known for its music, and fills up fairly early for performances. Though Charles has now retired, the piano plays on at the lounge, and patrons are welcome to sit and drink and listen to the music as long as they please. At times the music can get quite lively, but don't expect to get up and dance at the Coq d'Or. For that, you'll have to go back to the neighbors on Rush.
