Regular-old indie jangle pop quartet from the northwest side. Their eponymous, self-released debut release is a melodious and intelligent effort. The ringing guitars and subdued vocals bring early REM to mind, though some of their more interesting horn arrangements call Midnight Oil to mind and on some more spare numbers they sound almost like the Jayhawks. They've evolved into a new line-up with a new name, Ether Frolics. The band--Steve Fransen, James Warden, Brian Welsh, and Matt Mayes-- regularly changes vocal and guitar/bass duties, though the album retains a nice cohesive feel. This is one of the better local indie rock selections to have come out in the past few years. A record deal can't be too far away...
