| Popular tenor saxophonist/pianist is an important member of the Chicago avant-garde jazz scene, and a veteran sideman, though few albums have been recorded in his name. He's part of Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio, plays in Elvin Jones' group with fellow Chicagoan Willie Pickins, and has performed with Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams, Lou Rawls, B.B. King, Chuck Berry and the Art Ensemble of Chicago... His technique and traditional jazz chops are excellent and highly expressive on both of his instruments. Chicago Reader critic Peter Margasak calls Brown "A terrific saxophonist with a deep understanding of both bop's complex rhythms and the wild expressionism of free jazz." His newest Delmark release is Venus (1998) with his quartet (brother Kirk on piano, bassist Yosef Ben Israel, and drummer Avreeayl Ra), preceeded by Ultimate Frontier. With the Ritual Trio, Renaissance of the Resistance and Big Cliff are also on Delmark Records. While he's often classified as "avant-garde," he's also talented in the bop and post-bop genres. Ari Brown Live at the Green Mill, featuring the Ari Brown Quartet, was released in November 2007.
