| Concert-trained Violinist Andrew Bird founded this band with folks from his previous gigs, Charlie Nobody (drummer Kevin O'Donnell and bassist Josh Hirsch) and eventually two others, guitarist James Mathus and vocalist Katharine Whalen (Squirrel Nut Zippers). On the basis of their recordings (which later became the disc Thrills, They were almost immediately signed to Rykodisk. Chicago Magazine calls their new almost-swing (a la Prima, Armstrong, and Calloway) album, Oh! The Grandeur, "... too modern to be classic, and too classic to be modern."
