| Southsider Johnson grew under the training of Sammy Longhorn, when blues was more a means of putting food on the table rather than an art form. Though his knack for clean, emotive fingerwork was recognized quickly by area greats like Junior Wells, Koko Taylor, Son Seals, Otis Rush and Big Time Sarah, all of which recruited him for their national and world tours.
Like most middle-aged, golden-generation peeps, Johnson didn't cut his own records until recently, breaking ground with 2004's flash of subdued showmanship, Don't Mess With The Bluesmen featuring a collab with Billy Branch. In And Out followed suit just a few months later. And 2007's Live At B.L.U.E.S. On Halsted, which featured the debut subdued lounge pipes to go along with some fiery guitar, cemented his entertaining status right up there with the decades of all-stars who showed him the ropes.
