| Native Chicago is principal timpani of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of Northwestern University (where he studied mathematics!), he played in the Fifth Army Band for three years before returning for graduate work at NU, again in math. He performed with several local groups -- including the Evanston Symphony Orchestra (under Sidney Harth & Frank Miller), the North Side Symphony of Chicago (with the leadership of Milton Preves), the Civic Orchestra of Chicago (led by John Weicher), and the Grant Park Symphony, before joining his conductors (who were all CSO string principals) as principal timpani in 1963. A long-standing member of the Orchestra Member's Committee (and former chairman), Koss also coaches the timpani and percussionists of the Civic, and is a consultant for both Zildjian Cymbals and Ludwig Drums. His recording of Facade and L'Histoire du soldat with Chicago Pro Musica won a Grammy Award as "Best New Classical Artist." Koss' wife is also a professional percussionist.
