| Suave, sophisticated 70-something tenor saxophonist toured with Louis Jordan's band in the 1940s and recorded with Duke Ellington. He's still a fantastic player in this decade -- The Chicago Reader's Peter Margasak says he "applies his full, warm tone to postswing standards with the economic elegance and cool melodic grace of legends like Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins" -- and is scheduled to headline the 1998 Chicago Jazz Festival in a group with Eric Schneider.
