Ethnic Heritage Ensemble

The longest-lived and -- probably -- most unusual of percussionist Kahil El'Zabar's musical experiments, in that it feature two horn-playing lead instruments, and one rhthym (El'Zabar on drums).

Members since the early '80s have included Joe Bowie (leader of the band Defunkt) and awesome saxophonist Ed Wilkerson (replaced last year by another saxophonist Ernest Dawkins). Says the Chicago Tribune's Howard Reich: "With Bowie and Dawkins improvising ebullient melody lines, while El'Zabar provided a gently unulating back on mbira (or thumb piano), the trio produced a music at once harmonically provocative and rhythmically seductive."
