Late bassist who moved to New York during the 1975 AACM exodus, returned home shortly before his death. Inspired by Pablo Casals to play cello, his high school only had a bass, so he took that up, instead, studying with Walter Dyett, also the teacher of Nat "King" Cole and Johnny Griffin.
After stocking shelves at an A+P for awhile, he decided to pursue music full-time, and began playing with reedist-composer Henry Threadgill and drummer Steve McCall (which would later be called Air), and joined the Civic Orchestra.
His wife persuaded him to move to New York City. While there, he worked with Air (Theadgill and McCall followed him to New York), and -- after a pick-up gig with drummer Roy Haynes -- played with David Murray, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Don Pullen, Hamiet Blueitt, and the Henry Threadgill Sextett).
His first gig back in Chicago was with Rob Mazurek's Chicago Underground Orchestra.
