Georg Grawe

German pianist, one of avant-garde's leading lights, temporarily moved from Koln to Andersonville, saying that he likes the work ethic here -- where performers regularly perform, even if they aren't paid much.

The 40-year-old plays solo, in a trio with Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger and New York percussionist Gerry Hemingway, a quintet, and a chamber group. He's also formed a new quartet, with reedman Frank Gratkowski (a longtime Cologne friend), percussionist Hamid Drake and bassist Kent Kessler -- they will debut at the Empty Bottle's first International Festival of Jazz, and then tour Europe in the fall. During his stay here, Grawe worked with a large ensemble, sharing the writing with Ken Vandermark, as well as Fred Lonberg-Holm and reedist Guillermo Gergorio, both also transplants.

He and Anthony Braxton have a record out on Okka Disk. He is well-known for blending jazz, classical, and improvised music.

Grawe runs his own record label, Random Acoustics (which has released nearly 20 CDs in its 4 year existence).
