The accomplishments of sax virtuoso Greg Ward belie his young age. Born in 1982, Ward has already been a member of acclaimed local jazz acts, led a number of his own ensembles and commissioned chamber works for the International Contemporary Ensemble, the Peoria Ballet Company and Gallery 37ís Downtown Sound Gallery Composerís Series. He was inspired to take up saxophone after hearing Charlie Parker, and he has remained committed to the instrument since.
A versatile composer, Ward has musical influences that span jazz, classical, funk Indian, Latin, African and Jewish music. He leads experimental soul-jazz quartet We Tree as well as a self-referential quartet, and he has been part of Ernest Dawkinsí Chicago 12, the Occidental Brothers Dance Band, Ted Sirotaís Rebel Souls, the Proliferation Quartet, Bindu and the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. Wardís resume also includes a performance for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Series as well as recordings for Delmark Records, 482 Music and Rogue Art. (Scott Morrow)
