Janice Misurell-Mitchell

Composer, flutists and performance artist is an active proponent of new music. She has been president of the American Women Composers, Midwest, has been co-artistic director of the contemporary chamber ensemble CUBE since 1989, and is a faculty member of the DePaul University School of Music "Her attempts at stretching music's boundaries by incorporating improvisation and performance art...", says the Chicago Reader's Ted Shen, "have produced refreshing results."

Her award-winning compositions include a number of flute pieces, as well as works for larger ensembles. Chicago Sun-Times critic Andrew Patner calls her Scat/Rap Counterpoint (which features nine different characters -- played by the composer -- enaging in rhyming dialogues on the state of the arts in the U.S.) "the evening's showstopper."

But her compositions are not just clever performance art. They mix disparate ideas -- for example atonality and swingish jazz, with rigorous authorship. Fanfare's William Zagorski says, the "paradoxical and often haunting Alone Together, for bass clarinet and double bass... explore[s] the outermost possibilities of instrumental timbre and technique; and push[es] the concept of thematic variation to impressive heights."

She has received degrees from Northwestern University, the Peabody Conservatory and Goucher College, and her works have been performed in many venues, including Symphony Center in Chicago and at Carnegie Hall.

Her recordings include Alone Together (bass and bass clarinet) and On Thin Ice (for flute and guitar).
