| One of the country's best piano trios was reunited in the summer of '97, when John Campbell returned from New York City, whence he had departed in 1984. "Campbell makes his hard-won lyricism sound easy." says Chicago Reader critic Neil Tesser. "More than ever, he plays with an elegant focus, manifest in both his smart, expansive chords and an almost perfectly efficient balance between line, rhythm and dynamics." Campbell's partners in trio are bassist Kelly Sill and drummer Joel Spencer. Says Tesser: "The trio's marbled complexity, though, arises not from the individual talents of its members but from the length of time they've simmered in the same pot." (the group formed in the early '70s, when all 3 were in college!). The group currently plays Thursday-Saturday at Lush Life.
