7 year-old Middle Eastern / Latino / Circus music troupe originally formed to play during set changes of a performance art drama about death has -- temporarily at least -- retired the group, playing a farewell show at Double Door 'Cideshow the original group was called, as in herbicide, suicide, fratricide... Anyway, the band (whose name, btw, translates roughly as "The Little Towels") included Carrie Biolo (xylophone, brake drums, crystal goblets), Athanasios Zervas (claritnet, saxophone, flute), Randy Farr (bongos, congas, timbales), Kristin McGhee (saxophones, clarinet), Bruce Krippner (bass), Ned Folkerth (drums), and Max Callahan (pianist, organist, vocalist). The keyboardist often plays a miked, effected violin. At times these effects offer a guitar-like sustain or a wah-induced mutilated hippie-rock sound. More importantly, the violin is crucial in defining the Middle-Eastern melodies by blending in with the obscure saxophone lines.
The band released their sophomore effort, Volcano (Melon Melt) in the latter part of 1997. Their 1994 debut CD, Mayhem Among the Desert Theives, included tunes like "Azerbaijan Screen Door." A track called "Rock the Pineal" is on the Marooned Hyde Park band compilation, out in late May.
Krippner has joined local world beat group Ulele. Ned Folkerth is playing with Diane Izzo. Kristin and Randy play with Blue Turtle Tea Party, and tabla player Doug has a number of side projects, including Las Guitarras de Espana (a flamenco group with singers and dancers).
