| A talented saxman before taking up the guitar in the early 1970s, Vaughn became nationally known when Alligator Records re-released (1988) his previously self-produced disc, Generic Blues Album to widespread acclaim, furthered by his more recent contributions to the compilation New Bluebloods and a 1993 full-length In the Shadow of the City. Says the Chicago Reader's David Whiteis, "His solos follow a sequential logic, never relying on incoherent bombast to signify emotional intensity: he loads each phrase with a hint of even more excitement to come, and when the climax finally arrives, it often sounds less like a rush of ecstatic abandon than the satisfied contemplation of what he's crafted." He's been working recently as an A&R representative, but appears from time to time live. It's rumored that he'll be headed back to the studio in the near future...
