Michael Zerang

Born in Chicago, Michael Zerang is a first-generation Assyrian American who has professionally performed and composed jazz, experimental, electronic, and world music for more than 30 years. He's a versatile hand-percussion specialist, and his mastery has led to his involvement in dozens of projects. On top of his work in the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet and eight other named collaborations, Zerang currently performs in five duos, five trios and three quartets.

The commanding percussionist has recorded with scores of Chicago jazz luminaries, including Tatsu Aoki, Jeb Bishop, Kyle Bruckman, Hamid Drake, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jeff Parker and Ken Vandermark. Zerang also has a long history in theater, and he has taught courses at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College and Northwestern University related to performance technique, sound design and sound/music as it relates to puppetry.

With more than 60 titles in his discography, Zerang crosses into countless genres and performs with folk artists such as Bonnie "Prince" Billy. He has won handfuls of grants and awards in Chicago and Illinois, and has been commissioned by the likes of Redmoon Theater and Local Infinities for experimental theater collaborations.
