| Nicholas Barron is a unique and original artist with a voice that's as big as any out there. He's carrying on the tradition of Bold Soul singing and Poetic lyric writing. You hear his heroes (Otis Redding, Al Green, Louis Armstrong, Cat Stevens, Nat King Cole, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Ray Charles and others) when he opens his mouth and tilts his curly head, swaying and digging into each note like it's his last. There's a deep respect for the past, eyes and spirit on the future, yet firmly grounded in the moment. It's about listening. What separates him apart is his ability to play as a one man band with his Big Acoustic guitar and Gigantic voice coming at you like a freight train. Yet,under the overt sound, he's singing about the human experience and transcendance, and if you really listen you'll catch your own humanity and vulnerability in his. He also has a Brilliant Organ Trio that features Keyboardist Vijay Tellis Nayak and Drummer Steve Gillis. One loves the mix of space and intense sparring that runs powerfully through the three of them and leaves most listeners in awe of their raw musicality and spontaneity. They play Nicholas originals as well as original takes on tunes like The Beatles "Come Together," James Taylor's "Fire and Rain," and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," sounding more like an Acoustic version of The Isley Brothers or Bobby Blue Bland covering a classic song. For Nicholas' last fully produced CD, he, Steve and Vijay brought in their favorite players to round out the group, calling it simply, The Nicholas Barron Band. In January of 2007, The Nicholas Barron band were introduced by James Taylor as the launch artist's for the new New York Times Emerging Artist's series at Joes Pub in NYC, who called Nicholas, the band, and their then-new CD, "I'm not Superman," "undeniable"! The CD was co-produced by Nicholas' two best friends and musical cohorts, Drummer Steve Gillis and Keyboardist Vijay Tellis Nayak at their Chicago Studio Transient sound. In February, Nicholas signed to Swimmer was bought by Maverick Records who had a band on the label with the same name. Renamed MVP (Musical Variety pack), their second disc ,"Frequency Gel", was paid for with that money and co-produced by Nicholas and Steve. The SWIMMER sound was heavy on 3 part horn section and the funkiest Rythym section anywhere under Nicholas' stream of conscious lyrics and highly catchy songs. Steve went on to join FILTER and when he returned after Filter expanded, he and Nicholas continued their long collaboration. In 2005, Long time friend Tim Reisig who does sound for THE Oprah show, brought LA Producer Dave Way to a trio show at Longroom and within a month were recording a full CD at his studio, newly purchased, called THE PASS. Along the way, Dave added he Legendary Memphis Horns, who were the official STAX horn section that played on all the records by Al Green, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Sam and Dave, Percy Sledge and others. It was one of the most validating and important musical moments in Nicholas' life. Unfortunately, that CD, titled LOVE SOLDIER, hasn't seen the light of day yet. Nicholas has now been playing as a trio with keyboardist Vijay Tellis Nayak and Drummer Steve Gillis at THE LONGROOM for 8 years. In January of 2008, they're recording their first CD together for Candyrat and sometime in the Spring will record a fully produced CD as a follow up to "i'm not Superman". Look for Nicholas playing his one man band-one of a kind solo shows around Chicago. In March and April of 08', Nicholas will be on tour with Label mate Andy Mckee playing shows throughout the Midwest and in places like Colorado, Montana, Kansas, etc. Look for new You tube videos in the next few months.
