Plaid Penmanship

"Plaid Penmanship will bash your apathy with a tire iron,” says cult TV personality Flabby Hoffman, and that is the typical response that Plaid Penmanship receives from discriminating music lovers. The newest formation of singer/songwriter Ian Hoffman’s group includes members from the worlds of jazz, rock, experimental, and soundtrack music to name just a few. With a sound that incorporates all of these elements into one cohesive unit, Plaid Penmanship is at the forefront of truly original rock music. Their sound recalls the compositional grace of Danny Elfman, the danceable beats of Talking Heads, and the atmospheric rock of Radiohead. This eclectic mix of styles makes for an on-stage experience that keeps audiences engaged and shouting for more.

Plaid Penmanship’s self-titled debut EP is only the tip of the iceberg, but it gives listeners a sample of the musical invention and variety that is the cornerstone of the band. Recorded at Chicago’s I.V. Lab studio in March of 2006, the debut EP has already received accolades from both pop radio listeners and underground hipsters. The band is currently gigging in and around Chicago to support the new EP, with its sights on touring abroad. Janine Schaults of the Illinois Entertainer says, "Plaid Pennmanship...sound like Franz Ferdinand, if Prince sat in on keyboards and provided his signature funkiness."
