Red Dawg and the Apostles of Funk

Combining jagged pop-guitar riffs, old school drum machine beats, and J Mascis-esque vocals, Red Dawg and the Apostles of Funk prove that rap can actually be fun and you don't need to have a cap popped in your ass to understand.

With influences like Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, and Cool Keith, Red Dawg is every man's rapper and pokes fun at the stereotypical gun toting, ho slapping, pimps of the hard-core rap world. Make no mistake, Red Dawg will slap your ho. He'll just do it with a smile.

The band was spawned from the seminal rap duo M.C. Swan and Red Dawg, which formed in late 1994 and released their only album, Nimby. They immediately toured to support the album and developed a cult following, then disbanded.

Soon after, Red Dawg started recording his solo effort and solicited the support of an array of DJs to join him in his rambunctious live shows. The current line-up is Red Dawg, Lettuce Man, and DJ Runk Monkey.

The on stage antics of the trio have proven to be real crowd pleasers. The band has maintained the old fans from the Nimby days and has drawn hoards of new ones over course of three albums. They always give their fans what they came to see and have been given the title of "Best live Chicago act of 1998" by respected Chicago venue, The Fireside Bowl.
