Rockin' Johnny

"Rockin'" Johnny Burgin, originally from Mississippi and South Carolina, teamed up with Jimmy Burns for his Delmark Records release Leaving Here Walking, and has his own release Straight Out of Chicago (also on Delmark). Unlike his mentors, who escaped the South in the 30's and 40's to escape racism and crushing poverty, Burgin (who's white ) originally came to town to attend the University of Chicago. A Tail Dragger show on the West Side, however, convinced him that living the blues was the life for. He has been serving his blues apprenticeship ever since, playing with the likes of Pinetop Perkins, Billy Boy Arnold, Jimmy Burns, and Jimmie Lee Robinson.

His band is comprised of Burgin, guitar and vocals; Kenny Smith on drums (son of Muddy Waters' drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith), Sho Komiya, bass, and harp player Martin Lang.

Burgin is scheduled to perform on the Front Porch Stage with fellow west-side vet Mary Lane at the 1999 Chicago Blues Festival.
