| Born in nearby Downers Grove, Northwestern alum Sherill Milnes went on to be a prominent American operatic baritone, with roles at all of the major opera houses. Milnes inaugurated the first Performing Arts Series at Northwestern's Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in 1976.
