Studebaker John

This longtime scene veteran is a regular at Buddy Guy's and other blues venues around town. Studebaker John was born in Chicago in 1952 as John Grimaldi - his stage name comes from his car, a 1963 Studebaker Silver Hawk). In his youth in the city, he experienced some of the city's legends first hand: "I can remember a time when you could see Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Hound Dog Taylor and J.B. Hutto too. Being able to see them perform was breath-taking."

John's harmonica and guitar style owes a great deal to these masters of the past. Though he plays in a traditional style, he writes his own material that is less derivative than it is an original homage to past styles.

His latest release, 1997's Time Will Tell on Blind Pig Records, is a fantastic showcase of his fiery slide guitar playing. His talents are equally evident on his three previous Blind Pig releases: Tremoluxe, Outside Lookin' In and Too Tough. He's not as spectacular as the legends, but his straight-ahead '50s Chess-style blues is hard-driving and emotionally honest.
