Syd Straw

The recent Chicago emigre has been a member of the Golden Palaminos, as well as a guest singer on a number of records, including some by Rickie Lee Jones and Evan Dando.

Check out her new Capricorn Records release War And Peace, her first in six years. It's quite cool. On it, instead of her debut's all-star cast, she's backed by her minimalist, almost-country bar band, the Skeletons. Her debut, Surprise (Virgin), was well-received in 1990.

After being rejected by her college of choice, Straw moved to New York City to act and then stumbled into the music business. During her six-year break, she appeared on the BBC mini-series "Tales Of The City" and on the Nickelodeon series "The Adventures of Pete And Pete." On a musical note, she began her fabulous tradition of annual Valentine's Day Heartwreck Shows, after a personal heartbreak. Then, after finishing a tour in Chicago (in which she was opening for Poi Dog Pondering), she stayed.
