The Joy Poppers

Unsigned Chicago threesome has been performing the Beatles-based (not to mention The Beach Boys, XTC, etc.) pop written by singer/guitarist Tom Szidon since 1992. Tom's other bands include Ultra Swiss (which he left in 1998), and Canaries with James Web and Jason Botchko. Jazz twists, and dark lyrics, add to the complicated harmonies of the trio, who are all also in another band, their punk alter ego, The Girls (which performs the songs of Jason Batchko). "Original ain't the word for the vision of [The Joy Poppers]," says the Chicago Reader's Peter Margasak, "but there aren't many who could so imaginatively assemble and execute the lush bounty of pop flattery that he and drummer Jason Batchko do..."

The band performs on the soundtrack of Greg Pritikin and Gary Rosen's Totally Confused, a film which was recently chosen to represent the US at the Berlin film festival.

The band's first album, Zoomar, was released in 1995 through the Chicago label, Widely Distributed. After Zoomar came, The Golden Hour of the Shrine of the Little Flower, released in 1998 through Ipecac. Currently the band is working on their third album, The Joy Poppers III, and is set to be released sometime in 2004. Be sure to check out the All the Paths Lead Nowhere: Galactic Zoo Dossier Compilation #5 (Drag City), in which The Joy Poppers make an appearance on.
