Chicago-area (near-by Indiana actually) band is named after the US Navy Destroyer USS Turner Joy (DD-951) that, with the USS Maddox was a participant in the Tonkin Gulf Incident that precipitated full-scale US involvement in the Vietnam War. One wonders how they chose the name. Regardless, they are an accomplished power-pop band in the vein of Material Issue or The Replacements. Comprised of Dean Perrine (vocals, guitar), Charlie Ransford (bass, vocals), Jodi Perrine (keys, vocals), Marty Weisenbacher (guitar), and Larry Lutrick (drums), they have a self-titled six-song debut. They have a heavily layered sound with multiple guitar, keyboard, and vocal parts that give the record a great deal of depth and complexity. Though not yet fully polished, their demo EP has a number of outstanding tracks (notably "Everything is Going On," "Heaven," and the mid-tempo "Glitter in the Fog" which is probably their strongest track.) They play occasional gigs in the city and are currently recording their full-length debut with producer Paul Mahern (John Cougar Mellencamp, Afghan Whigs, Judy Bats).
