Twang Bang

Local rockabilly/country trio spent a year playing in Japan (insert your own "we're really big in Japan" joke here) where they won a Sony/Yamaha Open Music Contest. They're comprised of Itzi Rothowski on guitar and vocals, Redd Klaats on drums and vocals and El-Beau Johnson on bass and vocals. They've got a record Nothing Quite as Wholesome as a Fish out on Mom's House Records. It's full of short (the longest of the 17 tracks weighs in at 3:38) rockabilly/twang core ditties. The spare instrumentation on the record (they only have guitar, drums and vocals) creates an odd and striking sound. It's not quite like anything else that I have heard in a while. While the approach is minimalist in terms of the number of band members (they were a power duo comprised of Rothowski and Klaats for the record) the sound is powerful and driving. A touch of humor in the subject matter (with songs like "My Old Girlfriend Ain't So Bad" and "When I See You I Feel Weird") keeps things light. All in all a unique and entertaining band that completely breaks out of the generic Chicago indie rock mold.
