Verbow

This Evanston-based quartet released their long-awaited Sony 550 debut, Chronicles in summer 1997. Formed around the core duo of > Jason and Alison, Verbow has been a critcal darling since the 1994 independent release of Woodshed (actually made back when it was just Jason and Alison) and subsequent work with post-punk magnate Bob Mould.

After Woodshed, the two picked up a drummer, a bassist and a new name (Skinny) and entered the studio with Mould as producer. When they signed with Sony 550, the band found that a U.K. act owned the name Skinny and opted to change their name to Verbow (perhaps a nod to Jason's old punk outfit Verboten?).

Chronicles is a mixture of driving rock guitars and arty pop. Jason's vocals are crisp, strong and slightly menacing, kinda like Bob Mould a la Sugar (go figure). Alison's cello also adds a nice haunting element to the mix. Their latest recordWhite Out was released in April '00 on 550 Music...

Verbow also appears on a Whitehouse compilation, Come in 773.
