Yum Yum

Chris Holmes' pop orchestra made their major label debut May 21 with Dan Loves Patti (Tag/Atlantic). Retro bubblegum pop meats prog-rock, mixing simple hooks and orchestrated electronics, all inspired by the Ohio Express' 1968 "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy." And to think that it's all a joke...

The disc, which was recorded at Kingsize, has a notable cover. At an Evanston store, Holmes found a used guitar in which the previous owner "Dan" has carved his name, "loves", and each of his loves, the previous ones scratched out.

Members include bassist Paul Martinez (Galaxy of Mailbox Whores), vocalist, Chris Holmes (Sabalon Glitz and Ashtar Command, a techno duo with Red Red Meat's Tim Rutilli), drummer Mike Kirts, Jim Newberry, Darcy Vaugn, Marina Peterson, Barbara Gretsch and Hilary Poriss - all told, an organist, a string of several female vocalists and a string section (cello, viola, violin).

They're also on the internet. The "Yum-Yum Hour" is a new website which will air a weekly net broadcast (via Real Audio) from Holmes' bedroom featuring musical guest interviews and live performance ( http://www.atlantic-records.com/). They also appeared on Scott Petersen's film Out of the Loop, which documents the Chicago indie rock scene.
