Stanley's produce does go bad quickly... because it's often subpar and/or slightly old stuff to begin with."Small-farmed" and "organic" really has nothing to do with it. Stanley's buys near-expiration and small-sized produce at low, low prices; then they don't refrigerate it in the store (it's another way they keep their costs down); and they sell it for cheap so that it moves quickly. There's nothing wrong with their approach, just don't kid yourself that it's more of a bargain than it really is.

If you're a vegetarian, you could pretty much get everything you'd ever need to eat from Stanley's- and if you're an omnivore, just add a meat market run and you're set. The packaged goods are a little pricey, but everything else is incredibly cheap and diverse. Keep in mind almost everything here is small-farmed and often organic, so unlike supermarket produce, it doesn't last forever- so you should buy things at varying levels of ripeness (i.e. 3 ripe apples and 3 almost-ripe ones, and eat the ready ones while the rest finish ripening in your pantry). Also, Stanley's doesn't buy from factory farms, so don't expect to find everything available year-round. However, this is a great opportunity to try obscure seasonal produce- like hey, what's a leek? (Pretty tasty, as it turns out.)
