I visited Le Colonial for the first time last March and was very impressed by the knowledge of their wait staff and the flexibility of their kitchen. I have an onion allergy, and the chefs were very accommodating, offering to alter dishes for me so that I could enjoy some of the best foods they offer. Definitely one of the best dining experiences I've had in Chicago.

For the past eight years, this has been an anticipated dining experience on my semi-annual visits to Chicago. The food was always wonderful, the atmosphere like the web page ad - "a sedate oasis". However, my last vist in July 2007, things were quite different: The dining room was so noisy, you could not have a conversation, the Shrimp entree was tough and chewy, and the Banana Rice Pudding was a runny, tasteless pudding with 4 slices of Banana. The restaurant seemed to be understaffed and new motto appeared to be, "pack them in, throw some tasteless food at them and get them out of there". I am so sad that my favorite Chicago Restaurant has become a noisy fast food place . Farewell, my old Le Colonial - I will miss you.

We've been to Le Colonial twice this month, and I must confess, I'm a big fan. The steak and sweet potatoes is great, as is the pho. However, beware the bar. Not only was the rude, but the service is slow. We asked for a seat away from a speaker because we inded to have conversation, and his response was, "No, this is the volume we always have." My date waited a full 15 for the cocktail waitress to offer a refill on his mixed drink. That said, the food is great, the light is perfect, the decor is romantic and even the other diners are friendly and interesting.

I finally understand why people rave about this place. The atmosphere is like stepping back in time, and the food, oh the food is inventive and quite exceptional. As we dined, nobody pressured us to hurry, a true sign of intelligent management. A proper place for a romantic dinner (for all you lovers out there) or for a sentimental meal with your mom. I should make Mothers Day reservations now!

As far as restaurants goes this is a real serious keeper. Im my mind, its one of the few "gems" of chicago. The service can be a little slow and perfunctory when they are really busy, the food is always excellent, some dishes are better than others depending on your taste. I go back time and time again. Its easy to lose yourself in the atmosphere and the softly lit face of your companion... One of the best date restaurants in chitown.. ask for a table in the garden room... wow.

Best food I ever had. The Carpacio is fantastic. Good ambience and the service is great. At least on a Monday!
