Talk about a close-to-splitting-a-malt date. Margie's is packed with so much nostalgia, I wouldn't go there on a first date: there's so much to look at, you'll most likely ignore your plus one. The sundaes are very splittable. I've been before, and had forgotten one important fact...the menu has somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 sundaes, but the secret is they're kind of all the same. Most everything has some sort of fudge/caramel/nuts/banana. There's no cookie dough or spinkles or Heath bar...just good ol' 1940s-style bowls of the good stuff.

I had wanted to try Margie's since I saw it featured on WTTW's Wild Chicago. I love history and good ice cream so I thought it could be the perfect combination. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I had imagined. It smells like a mixture of antiquity and Pine Sol. The decor of wood paneling and brown booths matches the chocolate and hot fudge toppings. One would think an ice cream parlor should be white and red. Lots of doll and teddy bears on display, if you are into that sort of thing. The average age of customers is 72.3. I could have looked past all of that if the ice cream was exceptional, but sadly it was just so so. I've had better ice cream from the grocery store. The portions are massive and served in an old fashioned way. The old soda fountain idea is cool except my niece was uncertain of the seltzer water and warm root beer syrup she had to add to her float. It promplty overflowed because of the lack of space in the glass. Due to the increasing amount of laughter, I begin to choke on the tiny nuts from my sundae. I honestly thought I was going to choke to death. My quote was "Please don't let me die in this place."
