Smoking was excluded from the music room AGES ago. Don't let remarks to the contrary keep you from seeing a great band at this great music venue.

I've seen the Texas band Blue October at Scuba's on two occasions and it seems like a pretty good place to see and hear a concert. There are decent sightlines and acoustics seem pretty good. There is a shortage of seating, with most of the seating off to the sides. So if you're going to a crowded concert, be prepared to stand and maybe even get jostled around a bit. Lots of very cute young women come here and the ratio was the most favorable for men I've seen at a bar in Chicago. The crowd was very young for the concerts I was at, but the age level a particular night probably depends on which band(s) is playing. They have food here also which is supposedly pretty good but also quite pricey as you'd expect from the neighborhood. There is outdoor seating during the warm weather months as well. Expect to pay $4-5 for a basic beer, at least during big concerts. There's tons of other bars nearby for after the concert, especially north on Southport.

Schubas is a great bar and is a great place to see live music. The owner is a total pervert and sexually harasses his females employees.

I saw a show there recently and was overcome by the cigarette smoke. It is thick and got worse as the show progressed. I had to take a shower as soon as I got home. My clothes reeked fumes from the hamper the next morning.

Beware. If you value your comfort and health, avoid this place.

Shubas books some great acts, however I no longer go there. The music room is so smoke filled that it is uncomfortable. If you are a heavy smoker you may enjoy it. Otherwise buy the CD and listen at home where your lungs won't get fried.
