You might see some graffiti on the windows of Caliente, but once you're inside, the rest of the city becomes a distant memory. Bright colors on the walls and white tablecloths on the evenly spaced tables give the place a casual yet refined feel, and the Latin-themed art that covers the walls is a fine match to the cuisine. A big, heavily decorated bar (don't be fooled, it's BYOB) bisects the space, and a smaller room available for private parties and cooking classes is dedicated to the art of Frida Kahlo.

The menu here nearly replicates that of its sister location in Lakeview/Uptown, with the addition of a few smaller treats—the bocaditos. A variety of appetizers from around Latin America are available, from good old guacamole to tequila-marinated shrimp and crab-stuffed poblanos. The main courses follow suit with the Lakeview location, and a section of the menu is dedicated to nothing but enchiladas. The average entree, such as the chipotle grilled short ribs and grilled salmon, costs around $20, making it a little pricier than most nearby spots. Don't be frightened by the big Dia de los Muertos paintings—the food is worth braving the scary skeletons.
